Precincts and buildings

The UTS City campus encompasses a variety of precincts and buildings catering to teaching, learning, research, social and administrative activities. These maps will help students, visitors and staff find the buildings, venues and facilities they are looking for.

Three of the City campus’s precincts – Haymarket, Broadway and Blackfriars – are located at the southern gateway to Sydney’s cosmopolitan central business district (CBD), and surrounded by local attractions. The fourth and newest precinct is situated within the elite sporting zone at Moore Park.

Buildings

There are dozens of buildings and hundreds of seminar and tutorial rooms spread across the UTS City campus. However, once you understand the UTS: Building and Room Identification Standard outlined below, finding your way around UTS is quite straightforward.

Location codes consist of building, level and room numbers.

To help find your destination, download the UTS campus guide. Or if you’re not sure, just ask a UTS security officer.

    George Street, Haymarket, NSW 2000

Railway Square is located in the southern part of the Sydney CBD. Railway Square is dominated by the rising glass bus terminals structure, and by three sculpture light towers. Buses depart Railway Square Interchange to most parts of Sydney. Railway Square also provides access to Central Railway Station CityRail train services.

The area is not a true square but is a confluence of Broadway, Lee Street, Pitt Street, and George Street. UTS and Central railway station are adjacent to Railway Square. One can reach Railway Square by way of the Devonshire Street pedestrian tunnel.

See Sydney Buses for more information on buses passing through Railway Square, and their arrival and departure times.

Preferred paths

UTS has identified a 'Preferred Paths' network to help improve the safety of staff, students and visitors on its City campus. This includes a number of future paths, which will be implemented through improved management and design.

People commuting between the Haymarket and Broadway precincts, especially, should take note of these paths. These paths will help the UTS community take full advantage of the inner-city location of the City campus while avoiding some of the pitfalls such as busy traffic.

The routes are available on a PDF (172k).

Lifts

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) is about providing a fair go for Australians with disabilities. Its focus is on addressing the physical and attitudinal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from making the most of their abilities and participating more fully in the community. As a result, UTS is attempting to eliminate, ‘as far as possible’, discrimination on the ground of disability by providing lifts in every UTS building, in both the City and Kuring-gai campuses. UTS continually promotes community acceptance of the rights of people with disabilities.

Computing and printing facilities

Computing facilities are available to UTS staff and students for academic teaching, coursework, learning and research. Many of the labs are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every UTS lab has a 15-minute express machine, at least one colour scanner, access to a laser printer, and an internal phone.

So no matter where you are studying at UTS, you will have access to the up-to-date technology and software needed to effectively and efficiently undertake your studies. The general access computer labs are based on two different computer platforms – Mac OS and Windows.

You will need your UTS Student/ID Card with you at all times when using the computing facilities.

The Service Desk Knowledge Base contains useful information relating to making effective use of the Resource Centre. This includes colour scanning, and burning information to CDs and DVDs.

Please note: All PCs within UTS general access computing facilities need to close down for maintenance every two days. For more information regarding these maintenance times please contact the IT Support Centre on (02) 9514 2222 (from a mobile or off campus), or dial x 2222 (from a UTS phone). If you require further assistance visit the UTS Service Desk.

WiFi access

The UTS wireless network allows students and staff to access the UTS network, including the UTS website, UTS online resources and the internet, for work or educational purposes. All you need is a wireless-ready laptop or PDA with the appropriate software and drivers installed.

Wireless access is available in multiple locations on the City campus, including public spaces, to maximise coverage and convenience when undertaking study or research.

This map provides a list of all known public space wireless networks and the 'Hotspot Locations' receiving the strongest WiFi connectivity on your laptop computer. WiFi is also available in a large majority of classrooms, study areas and lecture theatres.

For full details of all 'Hotspot Locations' visit UTS Wireless and UTS-WPA Hotspots/Locations.

For more information, including how to login to access the wireless network, visit the UTS Wireless Networks website.

Study areas

UTS is constantly providing new group learning and informal study spaces to support the university’s new approach to teaching and learning on campus. These public spaces enable staff and students to undertake both individual and group work.

The university’s study areas reflect the UTS City Campus Master Plan concept of a ‘sticky campus’, in which students and staff are empowered to share knowledge and access resources in both formal and informal environments.

Most of these study areas provide students with wireless connectivity, as well as access to power.

UTS administration

An organisation as large as UTS requires a variety of administrative units to ensure it runs and provides services as smoothly as possible. These administrative units are spread across the university campuses.

Units and offices

These specialist UTS units provide students and staff with information and services, and assist UTS in engaging with the broader community. The faculty offices throughout the City campus exist to support academic staff and students.

The research institutes are integral to UTS’s aspirations to be a leader in collaborative research practices. UTS has excellent researchers and a strong research culture which, together, are responsible for the university's increasingly competitive research profile. There are now dozens of research centres across the City campus.

Faculty offices

The faculty offices are where staff and students can find the Dean’s for each of their faculties. Students and staff should visit the appropriate faculty offices when they have inquiries or questions regarding their course.

Specialist units

The smooth running of UTS and all of the facilities and services it has to offer to staff, students, and visitors, involves the units and centres throughout the Broadway and Kuring-gai campuses.
